Author studies comprise a part of students’ weekly library lessons. The main aims of doing this are to stimulate children’s interest in reading, as well as to develop their literature and literary knowledge. One of the ways we achieve this is to have children complete library projects and book reviews. Take a look to see if there’s a review for a book that might interest you!
Mr Greedy
Mr Greedy loves to eat, he will eat anything. Mr Greedy has a very big breakfast. One day he found a house. There was lots of food on the table but Mr Greedy couldn’t eat it because he was too full!
I liked the part when he saw the big door.
Read this book about Mr Greedy – it is a very good book.
S.H! Thankyou for your book review. Mr Greedy is a book that puts a smile on my face and I’m pleased to see you enjoyed it! I love drawing Mr Greedy too. Have you noticed the painting of him that the children on the library committee made on the library wall?
Rhino Neil by Mini Goss
This is a book about a rhino that was lonely. One day the funny rhino had a friend. Do you know who the rhino’s friend was? He found his friend at the zoo.
This book is my favourite book because it is funny and it has a nice ending.
I recommend this book for children of all ages.
Thank you C! This is a book I haven’t read but I will now!
Possum Magic – by Mem Fox
This book is about two possums, Hush and Grandma Poss. Grandma Poss made bush magic. The best bush magic made Hush INVISIBLE!
I like the book because they had Anzac Biscuits and Vegemite sandwiches and Pavlova. It was funny that the possums were eating human food.
I recommend this book for all ages.
Possum Magic – a favourite book. A great story with fantastic pictures. I agree with you that it is a book everyone should read! Thankyou for your review!
Camilla the Cupcake Fairy
Camilla gets a wand. She imagines all the things that she could do with it. It seems that it will take forever! But her teacher passes by and she asks her. Her teacher says “it will take forever if you do it by yourself”. So she called her friends Mia and Maya and ….. together they made the wand work.
I really liked the part when the three friends worked together to make the wand work by crossing their fingers and closing their eyes tight.
I recommend this book for all ages.
E W
E.W Thankyou for a very detailed review. The Cupcake Fairy is a very popular book in our library. As soon as someone returns it, someone else grabs it and borrows it! I love the picture on the front cover, too!
Diary of a Wombat – Jackie French
On Monday morning he slept, afternoon he slept, evening ate grass.
This story is about a wombat that spends a lot of time eating CARROTS, digging holes and sleeping. He lives in someone’s backyard.
I liked it when he found the perfect dustbath.
I recommend this book for kids up to 8 years old.
A great choice D.B. My favourite bit is when he bashes up the dustbin. I’m glad he doesn’t live in my backyard!
The Polar Express
The boy looked out of the window and saw a train. He wondered where it went. He found out where it went when it stopped. There was lots of elves.
I liked it when he looked out the window and saw the train.
I recommend this book for all children.
C.J. you have chosen one of my all time favourites. I love the pictures and I love the story. It’s a must have Christmas read. Look out for other Chris Van Allsburgs in our library.
Louisa May Pickett – The Most Boring Person In Class by Rod Clement
In this story Louisa is the most interesting person in the class. But when she moves schools she is the most boring person in the class! Read this book to find out how she tries to impress the class!
I liked it at the start when it showed the name of Louisa’s new school. It’s so funny! It’s called Bobbin Head Primary School. Ha ha!
I recommend this book for kids six to twenty.
P.W – A most impressive first book review. I don’t know this book. Is it from the Go Girls series? Thanks for your review.
It’s not in the go girl series. It’s a picture book. As you know, it will be in the C section because it was by Rod Clement.
Thankyou P.W for the information! I’ll look out for it! And I’m thrilled that you have such a great knowledge of the Picture Story call numbers! Keep reading!!
Louise May Pickett is fantastic! I can see why she was the most interesting person in class at her old school! When you have some time, you can have a look in the C section. Probably at lunchtime or recess, when all the kids are all out playing when there`s no teaching to do.
Thanks again P! I think you are probably our champion blogger! I’ll make sure I check out Louisa May Pickett! Let us know about any other great books you come across!
Morris Gleitzman – Too Small To Fail
Too small to fail is a wonderfully quirky book about a boy called Oliver. He gets a dog only to find himself needing to raise $11,000. Oliver’s parents are rich and run an Australian Investment Bank. This book is a story about a boy, a girl and four trillion dollars. Oliver’s parents are too busy to help him so he decides to sell his shares at places such as school, offering to double people’s money overnight. But he was never great at maths so things start to get out of control.
Too small to fail is a great book. I really recommend it if you’re into adventurous books and between the ages of 9 and 12.
N and M- so glad you chose this book. Over the past 25 years Morris Gleitzman has become one of Australia’s busiest writers. Did you know his latest book “After” has been shortlisted for this year’s Book of the Year? It’s quite a deep and solemn book – a bit different to some of Gleitzman’s more humourous books from the past.
Rainstones – Jackie French
The country Helen loves has been drying out for next to half her life. Can her entreaties to Mr Sarancen persuade him to invoke the power of rainstones as his Aboriginal ancestors did to bring water to this parched land?
“Mr Sarancen, please, you have to make it rain. Everything’s dying – Dad’s trees, the cattle, the wombats along the creek. Please help us”
Rainstones is a brilliant story based upon a true event. It has great adventure and hooks you in from the very first sentence. This book is great for children 9 and up.
This sounds like a “must read” girls. Jackie French is one of Australia’s most prolific writers and this is by all reports another thoughtful and interesting book by her. Congratulations on a most descriptive review.
Specky McGee – The Best of Oz Felice Arena
Specky has been selected to represent Australia in International Rules, taking on the Irish in a two-test competition in Ireland. Specky watched videos of international football rules to learn more rules from some guns from Australia and even Ireland. Specky McGee – The Best of Oz is a fantastic book, I would recommend it to sporty people.
B and T – glad to hear you enjoy Specky Magee. The Specky Magee series is extremely popular at Chilwell. Have you tried reading “Wish” by the same author?
Selby – Duncan Ball
Selby is the only talking dog in Australia. He was born an ordinary dog but had learnt to talk while watching TV with his owners, Dr and Mrs Trifle in their home in the little town of Bogusville. Selby has vowed to keep his mouth shut even if it kills him, only fast talking can save him when he’s caught in a cage with Two Tooth Tina. We liked this book because it had lots of problems and is so funny. We recommend this book for all ages.
Thanks for the review girls. Duncan Ball is one of Australia’s up and coming authors and Selby is one very popular dog!
The GONE series – Michael Grant
Suddenly it’s a world without adults and normal has crashed and burned. When life as you know it ends at 15, everything changes.
If you want a series of books that is well written, exciting and creepy at times, this is a book for you!
Names of the books in the series:
GONE 1
HUNGER 2
LIES 3
PLAGUE 4
FEAR 5
LIGHT 6
This is an EPIC book for kids 11 & up.
I-Thankyou for visiting and posting your review. I’m interested in your well written comments on the Hunger series. It’s a series I haven’t read myself – I think the titles make me gulp a bit!! I’ve made myself promise to pickup the first in the series and give it some time! Thanks again
Roar –
Little Lion set off to find some fun. He hit his head on some rocks and no one was there. He roared. Then he heard a roar straight ahead. It was his Mum and Dad.
I liked it when he found his Mum and Dad. This book is good for all ages up to 19 years old.
O – What a terrific book review! It must be a great book if people up to 19 years would enjoy reading it! Thankyou!
Fiona the Pig’s Big Day – Leigh Hobbs
This funny book I have never, ever read before. It was hilarious when I read it. In this story Fiona the Pig goes to school. Her parents are upset because Fiona is going to leave them for the whole day.
I liked it when Fiona the Pig had a meeting with her dollies.
I recommend this book for all ages.
R – It’s fantastic to see your book review at last. It was worth waiting for! I agree with you – Fiona the Pig is a very entertaining book. Besides having a funny story, the pictures by Leigh Hobbs are also terrific! Lots of people enjoy copying them and drawing Fiona themselves!
Probably the Mad Magazines,
its not really a book but I recommend it! its really funny and has lots of things for you to think about. It is bought from newsagency’s and other magazine shops
I’d recommend this magazine for 9 and up because most 8 and unders don’t get the jokes.
From M
Mad Magazines were very popular a few years ago. I didn’t know you could still get them! Needless to say, we don’t have any in our library.
Thank you M. Glad you’re keeping an eye on the blog!

Couldn’t agree with you more,S.M. “Possum Magic” has become a classic.

Thanks HL for your very positive comments!
HI MS O I L-O-V-E THE ALICE-MIRANDA SERIS BY JAQULINE HARVEY THERE SORT OF TOO GIRLY FOR BOYS BUT SINCE I AM A GIRL I ADORE THEM I THINK THE RECOMMENDED AGE IS 8 AND UP BECAUSE THERE IS ALOT OF WRITING
FROM SB
Good on you, S! You’re right about Alice Miranda! They are the most popular books we’ve had in the library for a long time. I agree with you that they are ideal for people in the Years 3 – 5 range.
Boy by Roald Dahl is a great book I just read it is about Roald Dahl’s child hood it is a great book
Thanks A. “Boy” is not one of our most borrowed books; probably the fact that it is biographical rather than fiction stops people from choosing it. However, it shows that Roald Dahl was a great writer across many genres.
hi Ms O I love the go girl series there very interesting and I can`t stop reading them!
Hi DB! It’s a good thing we’ve got lots of Go Girls books for you to make your way through! Thanks for writing on the blog.
Green Eggs and ham by Dr. Seuss
This book is so funny! The grumpy grouch keeps
saying ‘no no no noooo’ to Sam I am about eating the green eggs and ham. But when he tries them he actually likes them! My favourite bit is when they are in a car and the car is on the tree.
I recommend this book for anyone who likes funny rhyming books.
Hi SG ! Thankyou for your very interesting book review! Green Eggs and Ham is an oldie but a goodie. I’m glad you enjoyed the rhyming part because that’s a major part of Dr. Seuss’s books. Have you ever tried to make Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast?
